Out of the darkness slips a spectre,
The silent vision of the wind;
In total solitude
She glides across the plain.
By day she moves just like a shadow,
And by night she is not seen
Except for shining eyes
In the blackness of the night.
(Refrain:)
Wonder what is in that heart,
So deep and far removed:
Wonder what she thinks tonight;
Wonder where she goes;
Wonder how to touch that hidden soul.
She is the paragon of mystery,
A living riddle never known;
She is the rhythm others touch
But never hold.
By day she moves just like a shadow,
And by night she is not seen
Except for shining eyes
In the blackness of the night.
Tell me where she goes;
What is on her mind?
Even Solomon in all his wisdom
Could never comprehend Pearl,
Enigma above all others.
And when you see her fleeting image
On a moonlit summer night,
Recall illusion makes all real
Within your mind;
And what you see is what you long for,
Or what you fear but still believe,
When Pearl hides from you
Her true identity.
