Please Tell Me

Three things I thought about when I said
That I wanted you in my life
I couldn't yet say.
First was a short engagement
And then my oath forever
And third,
The rest of our lives.
Time stopped the day you went to his arms
And the moment I had was gone,
And yet how long?
I wait to hear your voice or to see you,
To change your mind and to say
What I couldn't before.
Please tell me that you long for me
And that you hold a part of me, too,
Inside of you.
And know I can't for once pretend
That I have seen my way at all through
My parting from you.
I hear you married him and you're gone somewhere far away from my arms
But not from my heart.
Three years, a thousand miles ago,
Fading dreams I cannot ignore
I want you to know.
Please tell me that you long for me
And that you hold a part of me, too,
Inside of you.
And know I can't for once pretend
That I have seen my way at all through
My parting from you.
Please tell me that you long for me
And that you hold a part of me, too,
Inside of you -- forever.
And know I can't for once pretend
That I have seen my way at all through
My parting from you.
